Taking a page from John抯 playbook I thought it would be fun to document my quest for the 搖ltimate dive watch?
Now keep in mind the opinions in here are on what I was looking for on my quest for the ultimate dive watch. You may agree with some or all of what I say, you may disagree with some or all. That抯 the beauty of watch collecting ?there is no right or wrong answer. Only what抯 right or wrong for each individual collector. So here抯 my story on the hunt for the ultimate dive watch.
———————————————————————
I抳e always been a dive watch guy. Up until maybe 12-18 months ago I can抰 recall buying a watch that wasn抰 a diver style. So over the years I抳e had dozens of divers, but not too many have been worthy of serious mentioning. But about 4 years ago I decided I wanted to get the 憉ltimate?diver watch.
First, let me go back a few more years. My first 慻ood?watch, and of course a diver as well, was a Tag Heuer 2000 classic two-tone. Bought on the recommendation of a friend who was also an imported of watches, it was my first 慻ood?watch. I loved it.

It was my daily wearer, and I mean daily. I wore it 7 days a week, 365 days a year for about 5 years. I liked it so much I bought 2 other versions of it.
They were:
A 2000 Professional Exclusive

A 2000 Classic with rose gold bezel

As I said, they were, and still are, great dive watches. However, they started to lose a little of their luster. Not sure why, but the 38mm size was probably part of it. I抎 started looking at other divers, and most of them were at least 40mm抯, and I liked the larger size.
Then in 2005 (I think) I decided to start looking for the ultimate dive watch. I looked at quite a few. The first I thought of was of course the Rolex Submariner. While looking at the Submariner I also looked at the Rolex Sea-Dweller at the recommendation of the Rolex salesman. The Sea-Dweller looked more robust (if that抯 even possible) than the Submariner, but I always liked the cyclops date magnifier of the Submariner, so crossed the Sea-Dweller off the list. Being a James Bond fan, I of course also looked at the Omega Sea-Master. During the course of looking at the Sea-Master I also discovered the Omega Planet Ocean. I first saw it online, both the standard black & the orange bezeled versions. My first thought was 搘ho抎 buy that?!? Well I went to the local store to look at the 42mm black bezel version & saw the 45mm size there too. What a monster! I of course had to try it on. To my surprise, it was a perfect fit. I then saw the orange bezeled version & it wasn抰 as bad as I thought when I saw it online, so I tried it on. It was great. So I bought one.

While a great watch & I enjoyed it immensely, it wasn抰 the ultimate dive watch. So I kept looking.
The next to look at was, again, the Submariner. I just kept coming back to it. So I went back & did a lot of wrist-testing in the AD抯 of the Submariner. Once again the AD kept trying to push me to the Sea-Dweller saying it was the ultimate diver watch. But I kept trying it on ?mainly to satisfy the salesman ?then I抎politely hand it back it & in the end went with the Submariner LV. I loved the green bezel, and it made a great combo with the orange bezeled Planet Ocean.

It was great! I even added a black bezel so I could go with green or black..

Now, after buying the Submariner there were several others that, while not the ultimate dive watch I was looking for (and I knew this as I bought each of them), they were great watches that I believe helped be focus what I was looking for. After getting the Sub (and finding out my wife was expecting our first child) I decided to commemorate the event with a new Breitling Super-Ocean. I抎 been wanting to add a Breitling to the collection for quite awhile, and loved the blue dial. So, ended up with the 42mm Super-Ocean.

While the Super-Ocean is a great dive watch I really didn抰 get it in my quest for the ultimate diver. I wanted a watch to commemorate the birth of my son, and hopefully give to him when he gets older & ready for his first good watch. So while I put a lot of thought into what to get, I really wasn抰 looking for the ultimate diver. As such, I doubt it抣l ever be sold.
I抎 also bought a Bernhardt Corsair.

It was this watch where I realized a colored dial is fun to wear. But, it lasted only a short time. While the watch was very well made & nice, the bracelet just wouldn抰 fit me right & pulled at my arm hairs.
I also ventured into the Tudor line, buying a Tudor Hydronaut. Another fun watch, with a carbon fiber dial. I had it about a year before selling it as part of my diver-watch reduction.

And a Grovanna came into the collection. A nice watch, especially for the price. I originally bought it with a blue bezel.

But soon the blue was changed for the red. It became my Falcon Game-day watch ?and still is.

A Seiko Orange Knight came into the collection as a Christmas present from the wife. Another fun watch to have, wearing it makes me want to look for another yellow dial watch for fun.

But like I said, none of these really were part of the quest for the ultimate dive watch. Some did however help me decide what features I did or didn抰 want in the ultimate diver watch.
Well, since I抎 bought the Submariner the Planet Ocean started to get less & less wrist time. So I decided to sell it. Thru the course of the sale I ended up with another, more robust, Breitling ?the Chrono Avenger.

The Chrono Avenger was my first titanium watch. It was truly quite a watch. I absolutely loved the size, the lightness yet strength of the titanium, and it certainly would take anything I could throw at it. But, I didn抰 care for a couple of the features, such as the painted logo, painted instead of steel hands, and mostly the chronograph function. It was just too busy for a dive watch for me. So it was sold.
I was now back to just my Submariner.

While I was starting to think it may just be 憈he one? something still felt lacking. So I decided to try the Omega Sea-Master. The 007 Bond Sea-Master is a classic and one I always liked. A friend has one & I constantly look at it when we抮e doing stuff. So when one came up for a good price, I took it.

It got LOTS of wrist time from the minute I bought it. But, for some reason, it slowly got less wrist time as my Submariner slowly took back over my wrist. Pretty soon the Omega wasn抰 getting much wrist time & so it was sold.
It was starting to be apparent that the Submariner was the ultimate dive watch. No matter what I bought, the wrist would gravitate back to the Submariner after a few weeks. Something still felt to be missing, but I couldn抰 put my finger on it. I knew I wanted something a bit larger than the 40mm size, but I couldn抰 place the issue.
Then, in April 2008, Rolex introduced the Deep-Sea. I loved the look of it from the first picture on Rolex抯 website. I called my local AD the very next day & placed my name on the list. Then started to wait, and wait. In September 2008 I 慻ot the call? I still remember it, a Saturday AM about 10:30. I dropped everything & sped (literally) to the store. In 30 minutes I was leaving the store with my Deep-Sea.

I loved it!! Look at the size. Compared to my Submariner it抯 a monster!

The improvements were noteworthy. Ceramic bezel, micro-adjustable bracelet, 43mm size, maxi-dial, huge case. As a large-watch guy it had everything. At first I抎 thought I抎 found it!
But there were some drawbacks to. First, the domed crystal reflected more light than a mirror on a cloudless day at high noon. If you didn抰 hold the watch at the correct angle it was hard to read. Second, and probably most notably, was the price. At $9,000 it was quite a bit of money for a steel watch that didn抰 leave you breathless every day you wore it. As the weeks went by it just didn抰 do it for me. The glare just bugged me. Especially after looking at & trying on the new Breitling Seawolf which was every bit as robust & well designed as the Deep-Sea, at 1/3 the price. My wrist started to, once again, gravitate back to the Submariner. So, within a month of buying the Deep-Sea, it was sold.
During the course of the Deep-Sea sale I had the opportunity to buy a pre-owned, but hardly worn, Rolex Sea-Dweller.

As mentioned above I抎 looked at the Sea-Dweller several times but always went back to my Submariner. But, I had a friend who had been interested in one, so I bought it thinking I抎 just sell it to him for what I抎 paid for it & help him out. After getting it I cleaned it up I of course had to try it on. I stared at it for a few seconds then took it off to box back up. After having it off for a couple seconds I decided to try it back on. Hummm.. Not bad looking. I checked it out in the mirror. Nice? Looked from another angle. Very nice? Took it outside & looked at the clean, glossy dial without the Submariners Cyclops. Very nice indeed? I may have to look into this. Well, turns out my friend decided not to buy it, so I started wearing it a little to see what I thought before selling it. After about 2-3 weeks I noticed my Submariner hadn抰 been touched. Surely that抯 not right, I always go back to the trusty Submariner. I抎 looked at the Sea-Dweller next to the Submariner probably a dozen times before & always went back to the Submariner. So I decided to do a little test. I locked the Submariner in the safe for 30 days to see if I missed it. During this time I wore the Sea-Dweller a lot. After 30 days I took out the Sub & realized something. I hadn抰 missed it at all.
So, I made the decision to sell the Submariner & keep the Sea-Dweller.
3 months after selling the Submariner I don抰 miss it. The Sea-Dweller feels as good on the wrist today as it did the day I got it, over 9 months ago.
I finally found it ?the ultimate dive watch.
I can抰 explain why it抯 the ultimate dive watch to me. Maybe it抯 the crisp, clean, glossy black dial. Maybe it抯 the iconic shape & design. Maybe it抯 the clean look of the crystal without the Cyclops. Maybe it抯 the thicker, bulkier case. Maybe it抯 the fact I can do almost anything in it & not worry one bit about damaging it. Maybe it抯 all of the above & maybe it’s none of the above. I don抰 know. And more importantly I don抰 care. I’d found it.
So here it is ?the Ultimate Diving Machine

Now after all that is said, and while I抳e whittled down my collection of divers to just a couple, there are other great divers I抦 still interested in. Diver-style watches will always be a style that interests me, no matter how enhanced or diverse my collection may become. For example, I抳e been tempted several times to pull the trigger on the new Breitling Seawolf. The yellow dialed version is simply stunning, and a fun watch to wear. And there are a couple others, as I抦 sure there will always be. I抦 constantly putting on the mental-brakes so I don抰 start getting too many diver-styles in the collection. I抳e found I enjoy a diverse collection of non-divers. But will always be drawn to a diver style.
However, no matter how you cut it in the end, the Rolex Sea-Dweller is simply, in my opinion, the ultimate dive watch & one I highly doubt my collection will ever be without.

A friend bought a SS Datejust from a reputable dealer, question is the six and nines in the date window are not fully closed, I am not an expert but I’ve owned a few Rolex watches and his seems to be the real deal. Serial number dates it to be 1989-91, I am trying to get him to send me some pics but does anyone know of rolex not using closed six and nines in the date window. Thanks in advance.

Hi all, my 2005 stainless steel daytona bezel has a lot of very fine scratches. Is there anyway to remove the bezel scratches? Will polishing with Cape Cod remove the black markers on the bezel? If sent to rolex servicing centre will they polish or replace a new bezel? How much is the replacement of the steel bezel?
Your help are most welcome.

Hello All,
I’m in the race again to buy a new Rolex in Jan this year. Since I just bought the SS GMTII Cermic bezel and a SS/Rose gold Datejust with steel face and Roman numerals in Dic. My New choices are: New Air King SS/18kt white gold fluted bezel/silver circular Dial with orange arabic numerals and a oyster brazelet OR a SS/18kt white gold fluted bezel Datejust with a steel/black dial with the alternate black(even) and red-orange(odd) dates and also inner bezel rolexrolexrol…engraving?????? Which of the two would be a better(in hstoric sense) Date does not matter that much to me.
